Why So Special?

After watching a short clip of scenes from Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ, an inquisitive school girl asked the question, “Why is he so special?” She asked this in the context that there are many others who were innocently abused and killed. So, why is he so special? Here is my response.

people SEEK

Jesus. What is so special about him, considering that there are many innocent people who are seriously mistreated, even to death?

All injustice is wrong. All injustice starts from the human heart when it is swayed by corrupt desires and loveless selfishness.

As we learn to give in to these selfish desires we begin to stray from the path that the living God has revealed to us.

Love your neighbour as yourself.

Be a blessing to others.

Injustice exists. All injustice will one day be judged. The greatest injustice, though, is the lie that caused us to rebel, which took away our eternal life. That injustice will also be judged. But that injustice will and has been corrected. We can receive eternal life once more.

One day, there will be no more suffering, no more tears and no more sorrow. Jesus will judge all injustice. But he also is the…

the gospel in 7 shades.

The online version of this series is now complete. Find it here.

Once there, you will find the online version of a gospel series I wrote called, “the gospel in 7 shades”. You may have come across it during one of your afternoon strolls through Rundle Mall, as I strum a guitar and offer you to take a free gift, or via some other local means. Most people who come across this page will probably find it through an online link, never having received a hard copy personally. Most would never have stepped foot on the place I call home. Then again, we live in an amazingly small world, so you never know.

Additional message for this current age and the days to come:

Do not be deceived by appearances, for there is only one Truth and Resurrection.

False signs and false powers will appear for the whole world to see. When the One, whom the winds and the waves truly obey and in whom the power of true resurrection rests, appears, will you be resting in His perfect peace, or will you watch as the false peace of this world unravels before your eyes?

When the created universe unwinds and melts away back into a lake, a ‘mass’, of fire, brimstone and sulphur, where will your soul and body be prepared to go?

Now is the time of salvation. See the signs of the times. Christ is calling. Seek God.

Which 7 words would sum up the good news and encapsulate the meaning of life for me? My definitive answer would have to be the following 7 words:

The message that unifies these 7 words is embodied in a series I recently wrote called, the gospel in 7 shades. The online version of this message is nearly complete. Please come check it out and be so kind as to give me some feedback. There is one more section to add, whilst another page linking to some supporting texts will follow.

Have a blessed, safe and enjoyable festive season. It’ll be upon us in no time.

Warmest regards

Here is an excerpt from The Gospel in 7 Shades series. Excerpt 5: THE SPIRIT ENABLES

The most amazing thing about the gospel of Jesus Christ is that it is unlike any religion or spiritual movement, simply because it is the offer of God’s ultimate gift of eternal life as an act of grace by God.

Jesus has already done all that was needed through his earthly life and sacrifice on the cross. But it is the Holy Spirit of God that enables us to believe in this gospel, follow Jesus Christ and walk in a new and eternal spiritual life.

A believer bears fruit as a result of the Spirit’s indwelling.

Jesus promised the Spirit would both comfort us and teach us all things. We can understand the things of God only because the Spirit teaches us all truth. We can only believe in the things of God because the Spirit gives us faith to believe in the Word of God. As disciples of Christ, we are also promised the power of the Holy Spirit, which enables us to live in righteousness and to become witnesses of the gospel to the world.

God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is one God. It is the person of the Holy Spirit who enables us to abide in Christ the vine and live in the fullness of his everlasting life.

the gospel in ROMANS 8

10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Christ from the dead dwells in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also give life to your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwells in you.

One of the Most Important Words in the English Language

The following 12 verses speak about what is arguably one of the most important words in the English Language:

seek – attempt to find (something)

The word ‘seek’ is up there with words like ‘hope’, ‘faith’ and ‘love’. When you stop seeking, it is as though you were deciding to stop living, to give up on things like pursuing happiness and the meaning of life. Living on this planet, with all of its ups and downs, should remain inspiring. There will be challenges along the way, but nothing should stop us from being passionate about the greater things in life, the bigger questions. We should always seek answers. We should always seek out the truth. We should always seek, whatever stage on the journey we happen to be traveling. And, have a bit of hope, a measure of faith and loads of love to help you see things beyond the immediate and the mundane.

Happy hunting as you go about the seeking that is a part of all of our destinies!

isaiah 53:6 – PEOPLE SEEK
1 Who has believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? 2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground; he has no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. 3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. 8 He was taken from oppression and judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. 9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was there any deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he has put him to grief; when you shall make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. 11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he has poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

genesis 3:6 – THE FIRST SIN
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

1 john 2:16 – DESIRES
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

james 1:14-15 – SIN
14 But every person is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death.

matthew 7:7, 6:33 – SEEK
7 “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.”

33 “But seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.”

matthew chapter 1 & 2

malachi chapter 3 & 4

the gospel in ROMANS 3

10 As it is written:
“There is none righteous, no, not one; 11 there is none that understands; there is none that seeks after God. 12 They are all gone out of the way; they are together become unprofitable; there is none that does good, no, not one.”

23 for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God,

Read about the message these verses speak to us about, here.

A note about sin from the author: Many people who identify themselves with progressive modern society tend to have hang ups about the word, “sin”. It’s an overreaction, in my opinion.

Sin is simply people doing their own thing. Put another way, it is when we do not live according to the way our physical and spiritual beings were designed to live.

Do we have hang ups with the moral connotations of the above definition? Oh, yes! Modern progressive societies just will not accept that this definition of sin applies to those who subscribe to the tenets and cultural frameworks of those societies. But that’s another story.

Rest… In ME

(Originally posted here.)

Sometimes, life doesn’t afford us a place to rest. The clearest, sky-blue day can feel more like a cold, bitter night, simply because there is no place for the soul to find its rest.

Rest. And the days aren’t getting any better. Lately, and more often than not, I find myself saying to myself and others, “I just can’t keep up with what’s happening in the world today. You know, the frequency of the stuff that’s going on right now? Just can’t keep up anymore. It’s all too fast! ISIS, Ebola, news of earthquakes, wars…”

Rest. Seriously! Do you ever look up at the sky, once in a while, just to see what’s  there? Just to see who’s doing what, trying to figure out who’s trying to take control of this world, right now? Is anybody in control over this whole mess?

And you don’t have to look out across the rest of the world to see the brokenness. One day, I want to see the billions of stories of personal brokenness, that ought to be told, get told; just so their owners know that someone is listening, that they are not alone. But what about just a little moment of rest from it all?

“Life is not fair!”

Maybe it seems that way. Could anyone find rest for their soul… when the people you thought most loved you betray you and your body… when the government you thought would protect you does nothing to aid you in your darkest hour against those who would stand above you as your enemy… how are you meant to find rest in that? Will we ever find rest for our souls in this darkness we call home? Was this journey always meant to be this painful, hopeless, messed up? Can’t I just give up and end it all here? Or is hope, and faith, and love something still worth believing in? Is someone listening?

I’m glad you asked. Yes. Someone is listening. Someone is going to tell your story. Isn’t that the beginning of true justice? Someone is going to give you rest. It seems easier to talk about rest than it is to talk about love, I think because love is such an abstract concept for most of us to try to grasp and understand.

“How would you know the beauty of life, without knowing the utter darkness that is possible in this life?”

Someone does love you, is listening to you and is now standing at the feet of your door, offering you a rest that is as timeless as the first light to stretch its path across the universe; as ancient as the first wind that ever stirred and caressed its way over the blades of grasses on the surface of the earth.

That rest is here. It is life. It is eternal. That rest can be part of your story and the relief in your relentless personal journey. I believe it is one of two end points of all that is broken and dark in this world. But will it be your final resting place? Yes, only if you take that rest from the one who offers it. The only sacrifice is that you leave your pride and ego at the door, and that you take it simply in all humility and thankfulness, and only in faith in the one who began a good work in you from the foundations of the universe. He knew your story then, he knows your story now. Will you take this rest from the one who loved you and gave his life to save you, so that you could have this everlasting peace and rest in your soul?

Rest. Don’t try so hard to work your way to a better place. You can’t earn it. Don’t try. Simply rest in Him.

Matthew 11:28-30
“Come unto me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and you shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
